Few instruments in rock history are as instantly recognizable as Jimmy Page’s Gibson EDS-1275 Doubleneck guitar. The image of Page wielding the distinctive double-necked guitar during Led Zeppelin’s legendary performances is etched into the annals of rock and roll.
Originally delivered to Page in the 1970s, the EDS-1275 became his hallmark, allowing him to seamlessly transition between 6-string and 12-string guitar sections during live renditions of classics like Stairway to Heaven. Over time, the instrument also became integral to other tracks, including The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Celebration Day, and Tangerine. Most recently, Page brought it back on stage for a tribute to Link Wray at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November 2023.
A Collaborative Reissue with Advanced Craftsmanship
In partnership with Jimmy Page, Gibson Custom has reintroduced the EDS-1275 in a faithful recreation using advanced 3D scanning technology. This method ensures an accurate replication of the guitar as it appeared before enduring wear and tear from Page’s extensive world tours.
Dubbed the “Jimmy Page EDS-1275,” the guitar boasts a vintage-inspired nitrocellulose lacquer in a ’69 Cherry finish. This gives it a softly aged patina, differing from the heavily detailed aging featured on the limited-edition 1969 EDS-1275 Doubleneck Collector’s Edition released earlier this year, which has already sold out.
Exceptional Design and Authentic Features
The reissue features a double-cutaway, one-piece mahogany body that offers unparalleled access to both necks. Each neck—crafted from mahogany with long tenons and hide-glue fittings—matches the original instrument’s specifications. The neck profiles were meticulously recreated from 3D scans of Page’s historic guitar.
Both necks are fitted with bound Indian rosewood fretboards, each equipped with 20 medium jumbo frets and adorned with aged cellulose nitrate parallelogram inlays. With a 12-inch radius on both fretboards, the instrument provides a balance between smooth chord transitions and the flexibility needed for string bending during solos.
Attention to Detail
The guitar’s hardware stays true to its roots. The 18 tuners are Kluson double-line, double-ring models, mirroring those found on the original. The headstocks retain the distinctive 17-degree angle and logo stylization specific to Page’s EDS-1275.
Electronics are similarly faithful, delivering the signature tonal character of the original. The six-string neck is powered by two uncovered Jimmy Page EDS-1275 Custombuckers with Alnico 5 magnets, while the 12-string neck features covered pickups. Controls include period-accurate CTS potentiometers, ceramic disc capacitors, and Switchcraft components for the pickup and neck select switches, as well as the output jack.
A Testament to Rock History
The Jimmy Page EDS-1275 reissue represents more than just a guitar—it’s a tribute to a legacy. With its precise craftsmanship and authentic details, this instrument celebrates the profound impact of Page’s artistry, ensuring the iconic doubleneck continues to inspire future generations of musicians.
